Relationship between obesity and depression
As we said at the beginning, obesity and depression are related and this relationship can be examined mutually. Recent studies on obesity and depression are divided into two groups, one group has investigated the effect of obesity on depression and the other group has investigated the effect of depression on obesity. In each group of studies, several findings have been discovered that prove the connection between these two diseases.

Obesity and overweight are one of the main causes of physical diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, stroke, liver problems, damage to bones and spine, etc. But obesity is also known as one of the causes of mental illnesses such as mood disorders, anxiety, depression, etc.
According to a recent study, adults who are overweight are 55% more likely to suffer from depression than others. Also, being overweight increases the possibility of some other mental illnesses such as bipolar disorder and panic disorder (agoraphobia).

The cause of depression in obese people
Now we come to this important question, how does obesity cause depression? Several factors lead to mental health problems in obese people, including the following:
Obese people are less able to do their favorite activities such as traveling, participating in entertainment events, etc. The reason is social isolation and loneliness.
Some people who are overweight feel dissatisfied and ashamed of their body, and the fear of other people's judgments makes them feel stressed, anxious and disappointed.
The negative views of the society, which falsely consider fat people as unattractive or lazy, lead to discriminatory behavior about fat people, which adversely affects their self-esteem, peace of mind, and even job opportunities.

Do mental health problems and depression lead to obesity?
The relationship between obesity and depression is two-way; This means that depression can also lead to overweight and obesity. On the one hand, depression affects a person's eating habits, and a patient suffering from depression may have more appetite and increase the consumption of unhealthy foods.
On the other hand, depression leads the patient to loneliness and isolation and reducing physical activities, which results in weight gain and obesity. According to studies, people with depression are 58% more prone to obesity and overweight than others.
The cause of obesity in patients with depression
But why do patients with depression get fat? Depression is associated with some changes in behaviors and habits and even physical conditions, the result of which will be overweight and obesity. Among the reasons for being overweight, after suffering from depression, the following can be mentioned:Chronic stress, anxiety and depression cause the patient to use food as a way to cope and increase their food consumption or even go for more unhealthy foods.
Suffering from depression and anxiety leads to a lack of serotonin in the body, which results in a greater desire to consume carbohydrates and high-calorie foods.
Adults with depression tend to exercise and participate in other activities less than other people. This sedentary lifestyle will also lead to overweight problems.
